Reflection of TSL-503 (Final presnetaion Of a Textbook Evaluation)

I have evaluated the textbook of class vi & the name of the book was "English for Today-for class VI). I was the third presenter but the interesting thing was we the students were supposed to evaluate any textbook from class v to X and the two presenters who presented before me were also evaluated the textbook of class vi. It made me good that I evaluated very specifically with the examples where they failed to face.

In my presentation what I focused were:

1. How satisfactory is the general appearance of the book?
the appearacne of the book is not that much satisfied.

2. How appropriate is the design and illustration of the book?

The pictures are used in the book is not good looking where al are black and white & in some pictures it is hard to find out the exact illustrations with the social activites.

For example there is a chapter name “make your snacks” where the ingredients are tomatoes, bread, lettuce, mayonnaise, cucumber, egg fry etc. And here the pictures of lettuce, egg fry, mayonnaise are totally unclear. As a rural student it is too tough to guess that kind of food item these are. As a Bangladeshi normally village people do not take these kinds of food as their snacks.

3. Are the accompanying materials relevant to the subject matter being discussed?

There is a chapter name “our wage earners” and here in the very first there is an exercise of picture illustrations with some clues(words) and the words are like wage earner, remittance, emigration, overseas etc. so as a rural student it is not possible to guess by looking at the picture where it has some difficult clues. Moreover the pictures are not so clear to grap the ideas.

4. Are the objectives of the course for which the book is used met?

though the objective of the course is to develop four skills such as speaking, reading, writing and listening. but listening ans speaking is totally ignored.

5.Are the topic contents carefully selected so that each concept will help in the full understanding of the subject?

I don’t think so because there are some topics or content which are not familiar for all the students for example: for preparing food items, knife is used where it is not familiar for many students to use knife for cutting any vegetables

6. Are the language contents carefully selected so that each concept will help in the full understanding of the subject?

In some cases the language is okay but in some cases it is not.

7. How far are the social and cultural contexts appropriate in the book?

In this case there are some chapters name , an unseen beauty of Bangladesh, an inviatation for robin, a railway station, boats sail on the river, grocery shopping etc which are appropriate under the social and cultural contexts. On the other hand there are some issues which are not appropriate like the picture of electric oven, knifes, vegetable item, in term of cloth items, lungi is not showed which is most familiar for most of the students, different flavor of ice cream such as chocholate, vanilla etc

88.How much is the teaching of language skills satisfied in the book?

Teaching of language skills is satisfied because a qualified teacher can teach the with the books if all the skills are practiced with appropriate teaching materials.

9. Is the book suitable with regard to its teach ability?

It totally depends on the ability of the teacher.

10. Is the book suitable with regard to its flexibility?

In some cases it is flexible and in some cases it need to be changed a bit so that most of the students can get the ideas and practice languages on the base of CLT approach.

11. Is the book suitable with regard to its teaching methods?
Yes I think its suitable with the regard of its teaching method because all the exercise are arranged with individual task, pair task,  group tasks with listening, reading, writing & speaking skills. But the problem is the practice of these in the class which depend on the students as well as teachers.

12. Are the tests, activities and exercises provided in the book effective?

Most of them are appropriate but in some extent it is needed to bring changes for motivating students with the familiar things.
