Reasons for
using internet in ELT:
There man reasons for using computer in ELT such as
to get information, communicate with others as well as socialization &
mobilization.
Effectiveness of computer in ELT:
In many cases using computer is
effective for the learners & teachers. It motivates learners by reducing
anxieties. Besides it also engage them to learn. As they practice all the
things practically it become autonomous among them. In addition it can play
important roles like:
1)As
a tutor:
It
gives advice to the learners, analyzes the information as well as it has so
many activities for practicing.
Grammar girl: In giving advices, it gives the space to the beginner level
learners to differentiate between two words, different between verb & noun,
improve writing, practice through different interesting way.
COCA ( Corpus of Contemporary American English): For
analyzing, this is a tool by which learners can find out different words &
usages of these.
Free rice: In activities part, this is one of the tools to improve the vocabulary
level from easy to difficult level. Here learners will be inspired through
motivational words & for each correct meaning they give rice. Beside this
the mistakes answer again come to make the learners practiced.
2)As a tool:
It can be said as a tool where it is used for creativity, for communications as
well as collaboration.
3)As a stimulus:
It motivates students by proving practical & enjoyable activities.
Blooms taxonomy in digitally (based on cognitive
load): We can use Blooms Taxonomy in digitally to make the learners active
through computer. The stages are described briefly below:
Creating: learners can create different programs like wiki, blog, face book
etc.
Evaluating: In evaluating learners can do
experiment, judge, comment, hypothesis etc.
Analyze: Through compare, organize, outline, linking
etc learners can participate in analyze part.
Applying: learners can apply their implementation of
works, carry out, share, edit etc.
Understanding: Through the described works, learners
can interpret, summarize, categorize etc.
Remembering: learners can also remember factual or bullet
point etc.
Blogs:
It is a kind of
Electronic journal & personal diary. Anyone can write whatever he want
where there is no restriction because it’s everyone’s personal book. In
addition anyone can criticize or praises the blogs of others. It is a very
strong tool. It’s a kind of strong platform to reach to the people. For example:
Shahbagh’s incident happened in our coutry.. Besides this, it can be act as a
tutor, learner & class.
Wiki:
This helps learners to create his or her own
page which motivates as well as inspires learners to make them confidant.
Teaching speaking & listening using computer:
In SLA (second language acquisition)
the role speaking is undeniable & this is why we have to give focus on
speaking which helps learners to listen as well. Speaking is related with
thinking of message, negotiate meaning, produce comprehensible output,
hypothesizing etc.
Oral interaction can be two types such as informative and interactive. Informative
oral interactions are like routines, scripts which can be put in formal
situations. On the other hand interactive oral interactions are like dialogue
exchange with goes under informal situations. in these case we can use technology
by using drilling sessions as well as watching movie sessions.
It is also important to focus on the pronunciation of the learners. There are
many approaches to teach pronunciations. These are:
1) Intuitive -imitative approach:
In this case learners listen & repeat where there is no interaction. By
using audio materials this can be done which helps learners to develop their
listening as well as speaking skills.
2) Analytic -linguistic approach:
In this case learners can learn explicit, structural speech by using different
chart speech and phonetic alphabet.
3) Current integrative approach:
In this case pronunciation is not taught separately where it gives more focus
on super segmental of stress such as stress, rising tone etc rather than sound
of letter.
Teaching
reading using computer:
In teaching we can easily use technology to teach
the learners easily where it makes students engaged as well as give practical
situations to learn effectively. here the main important thing is to use
skills, strategies & disposition of skills & strategies in term of
searching information so that we could get the exact information within a short
time.
There are 3 things we have to do before searching an answer. In the beginning we have to be focused on a specific topic with exact words
& phrases, then in the searching part we have to search what we are
supposed to get & then finally we have to evaluate as well as communicate
with the information whether the information is exact or not. Finally we have
to cite our sources that from where we got the information.
Here a teacher can instruct the students in term of how to read as well as how
to search any information on the internet. on the other hand a teacher has to
be expert in internet workshop like what is internet, the power of it, how to
find an information & in internet scavenger hunts like which provides
structural platform with a set of tasks that require students to locate piece
of information.
Teaching
writing using computer:
Role
of writing is SLA (second language acquisition) is very important & the
writing part is integrally linked with reading part. Reading and writing
emphasize the importance of schemata which is the background knowledge of the
learners. Most importantly writing task deals with three parts such as Pre
writing, while writing and post writing.
Pre writing has done with brain storming or free writing & by using blogs; face
book a students can does this easily.
While writing is interactive & it is done with the main content which is
the product of the learners.
Finally in post writing a learner can edit through revision & importantly
in blogs or Face book or other web activities the editing part in included
which can help learners. Writing can be different types such as grammar based,
discourse structure based such as narration, comprehension, dialogue exchange
etc.
There are many students who do not want to share their feelings or opinions
through speaking in front of the class & in this case computer helps them
to enhances their ideas by using blogs, Wikipedia, Face book, twitter etc to
develop their writing skills.
